Your Best Buds: How Is Hemp Oil Extracted?

While the jury’s still out on the effectiveness of hemp oil or hempseed oil for cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s, there’s evidence that it may be helpful for inflammation and skin disorders.

Rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, hemp oil helps fortify the skin barrier. That means the skin becomes more resistant to infections and related conditions, such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, and lichen planus.

Now, if you’re wondering if you can make hemp oil at home, you have to know the answer to, “how is hemp oil extracted?” Here, we’ll discuss a couple of ways to make homemade hemp oil.

Method 1: Making Hemp Extract Oil From Buds

One of the easiest hemp oil extraction methods, this process uses hemp buds and your preferred plant-based oil. Some good ones include walnut oil, flaxseed oil, and sunflower oil.

You’ll also need an oven, which you’ll use to prepare the buds. Be sure to get dried buds, as these have the highest concentration of cannabinoids.

Next, grind the buds with a processor, grinder, or sharp knife. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil, then spread the ground-up hemp atop it. Heat the powder in the oven for an hour until it looks a bit brown.

With a slow cooker, dump your hemp powder in it with your chosen carrier oil. Stir every 30 minutes for two to three hours, making sure to keep the heat low. Last, strain the powder out of the oil, transfer the latter to a clean jar, and store it in a cool, dark place.

Method 2: Making Hemp Oil From Concentrate

Another way to make hemp oil is to use CBD concentrate. You’ll use a cup of cooking oil (any kind), a double boiler, mortar and pestle, and a thermometer with this method.

You want to be sure you’re using low heat to prevent the deactivation of the CBD concentrate. Keep the temperature below 245 °F.

After gathering your materials, prepare to measure 1.1 grams of CBD concentrate and crush it until it becomes a fine powder. Add that to the oil in your slow cooker or double boiler. When the powder has completely dissolved, it’s ready for transfer into a clean container, but make sure to cool it off first.

If you plan to use the oil to make lotions, salves, or balms, it will keep for as long as two months. It’s also worth buying a full spectrum hemp oil salve to see how homemade hemp products compare and if there’s a need for you to tweak your hemp oil extract recipes.

How Is Hemp Oil Extracted? Other Processes to Consider

There are two methods to consider for those who plan to move their operations out of their kitchens: CO2 extraction and alcohol extraction.

The first one requires further refinement with an alcohol solvent, while the latter involves an evaporation step to remove the solvent residue. If you’re considering alcohol extraction, it’s best to go for IPA or isopropyl alcohol since it’s a nonpolar organic solvent and leaves zero oil traces.
